Dakota Jones Delivers Soulful Funk Goodness On New Track, “Sugar Pie”

If you’re looking for some soulful funk goodness, New York’s Dakota Jones has you covered. The four-piece is back with “Sugar Pie,” their first single in over a year. It’s a sensual jam that showcases singer Tristan Carter-Jones’s buttery smooth vocals. The instrumentals are cool and crisp, with Scott Jet Kramp delivering fantastic bass grooves, Steve Ross bringing jazzy beats on the drums, and Eddy Marshall strumming stylishly on guitar.

There is an undeniable swagger to the track. But though the song is bold and cocky, it also has a whole lot of sweetness to it. The band describes it as “the effortless cool of a gang of two, walking in step through streets paved with sugar under a plush pink sky. Don’t know where you’re going and you don’t care. It’s rose-coloured glasses on the tip of your nose, and kisses like cotton candy.”

Dakota Jones has been putting out soulful, chic tunes for nearly eight years. Their Twitter bio describes them perfectly: “the hell-hath-no-fury power of Chaka Khan, wild spontaneity of Janis Joplin, and the honey-dripping sensuality of Marvin Gaye.” If you dug “Sugar Pie” be sure to dive into their backlog. 2021’s Black Light is fantastic album, and there’s something magnetic about the silkiness and sultriness it maintains throughout its runtime. Stand out tracks include the assured “Black Magic (That Power)” and the stripped-down and evocative “Lord Please” – but really, all the songs are worth giving a listen.

Stream “Sugar Pie” wherever you listen to music. You can follow Dakota Jones on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and check out their website for tour dates and merch.
